Eden Community Gardens

Description:

Eden Community Gardens is sponsored by Covenant United Methodist Church. They have donated an acre of full-sun land adjacent to the church for the garden development in the Gleneden/Colbert region of Spokane County. Currently there is only one community garden in North Spokane County. This start up project will be a welcomed addition to this underserved region. Since we are a community garden dedicated to serving all our neighbors, we welcome all people regardless of religious affiliation.

Several large apartment complexes lie in close proximity to the garden site on North Gleneden Drive. In addition, there are hundreds of homes nearby, most on small and/or shady plots. The opportunity to garden will improve our neighbors’ ability to provide their families with healthy organic vegetables, to socialize as a community, and to learn gardening techniques. Our long-range plan is to add amenities to this garden that will make it a community gathering place for social activities centering on our locally produced organic crops and flowers. We also plan for local Master Gardeners to provide classes in gardening techniques and our volunteer dietician to assist individuals in making healthy food choices

In 2014 Spokane Regional Health District reported that 15.6% of the adolescents in Spokane experienced food insecurity. The Washington Department of Health reported in 2017 that 21% of adults, over age 18, also encounter this insecurity. We wish to address this need of our neighbors. We have the support of the Mead Food Bank, the North County Food Bank and Family Promise Open Doors Emergency Food Bank. The crops we raise and share with these organizations will assist them in improving the quality of life for those individuals and families they serve.

Wandemere Christian Preschool is partnering with us in teaching children about healthy eating, growing nutritious foods, and caring for the environment. Smaller raised beds will be made available to children at a minimal fee. Their parents will be encouraged to continue gardening with them through the summer.

The annual fees for raised bed rentals are:
$25.00 for 4 X 8 foot beds
$37.50 for 4 X 12 beds
$25.00 for 2 x 8 wheelchair-accessible beds
$37.50 for 2 X 12 wheelchair-accessible beds
